Refractor

A chromium parallel card with a rainbow-like reflective coating. Introduced by Topps in 1993 Finest. Refractors are rarer than base chrome cards and command significant premiums.

A Refractor is a parallel version of a Topps Chrome or Bowman Chrome card that features a rainbow-like prismatic coating. When you tilt a Refractor, it displays a distinct color-shifting shimmer that base Chrome cards do not have.

Refractors were introduced in 1993 Topps Finest and became a staple of Topps Chrome and Bowman Chrome releases. They are printed in smaller quantities than base cards — exact print runs vary by product, but a standard Refractor might be 3-10x scarcer than the base version.

Beyond standard Refractors, there are numerous sub-variants: Gold Refractor (/50), Orange (/25), Red (/5), Superfractor (1/1), X-Fractor, Prism, and more. A Superfractor (one-of-one) of a star player's rookie card is one of the most valuable modern cards — Mike Trout's 2009 Bowman Chrome Superfractor auto sold for $3.93 million.
