Card Details

1
Topps #311 PSA 9 Vintage

The most valuable post-war baseball card in existence. Mantle's #311 came from the high-number series, which Topps dumped into the Atlantic Ocean rather than store — making surviving copies scarce before scarcity was even a collecting concept. Three PSA 10 copies are known. The PSA 9 sale in August 2022 set the all-time record.

2

1955 Topps Roberto Clemente

$478K
Topps #164 PSA 9 Vintage

Clemente's rookie card from the 1955 set is one of the most desirable in the hobby. Twelve Gold Gloves, 3,000 hits, a tragic death in service of others — his legend is untouchable. The 1955 set is difficult to grade due to centering issues; PSA 9 examples are extremely rare.

3

1968 Topps Nolan Ryan RC

$600K
Topps #177 PSA 10 Vintage

Ryan's rookie card — shared with Jerry Koosman on the same card face — is the most valuable single-player rookie in the vintage era after Mantle. 5,714 strikeouts, 7 no-hitters, and career longevity spanning four decades. PSA 10 copies of this card are extraordinarily rare given the era's print conditions.

4

1954 Topps Hank Aaron

$357K
Topps #128 PSA 9 Vintage

Aaron's rookie card from 1954 captures the start of a career that produced 755 home runs and held the all-time HR record for 33 years. The 1954 Topps set is widely considered one of the most attractive in Topps history, making PSA 9 and 10 copies highly sought after by advanced collectors.

5

1952 Topps Willie Mays

$336K
Topps #261 PSA 8 Vintage

Mays' 1952 Topps card — his most recognizable early card — is from the same landmark set as Mantle's #311. "Say Hey" was the greatest all-around player in history by many accounts: 660 HR, .302 average, 12 Gold Gloves. PSA 8 copies regularly trade for six figures.

6

1969 Topps Reggie Jackson RC

$96K
Topps #260 PSA 10 Vintage

Mr. October's rookie card from the 1969 Topps set remains one of the most iconic baseball cards of the late-vintage era. Three World Series MVPs, 563 home runs, and a Hall of Fame plaque. PSA 10 copies are legitimately scarce — the 1969 print conditions were not favorable for gem mint grades.

7

1975 Topps George Brett / Robin Yount

$24K
Topps #228 PSA 10 Junk Wax Adjacent

A dual rookie card featuring two Hall of Famers on the same card. Brett's .390 average in 1980 and three batting titles alongside Yount's two MVPs make this the most significant multi-player RC in 1970s Topps. PSA 10 population is limited despite higher print runs than the 1950s sets.

8
Topps #482 PSA 10 Junk Wax

The most valuable card from the junk wax era, Henderson's rookie sits apart from its contemporaries due to condition scarcity within overproduction. All-time stolen base record (1,406), two World Series rings, Hall of Fame first ballot. Centering issues in the 1980 Topps run make PSA 10 copies rare.

9

1993 Topps Derek Jeter

$5K
Topps #98 PSA 10 Junk Wax

Jeter's base Topps rookie — less famous than his 1993 SP foil — trades more frequently and represents the accessible entry point into his rookie market. Five World Series rings, 3,465 hits, and a singular presence in New York for two decades. PSA 10 copies circulate regularly on eBay.

10

1989 Topps Traded Ken Griffey Jr.

$2K
Topps Traded #41T PSA 10 Junk Wax

The Topps Traded Griffey RC complements his more famous 1989 Upper Deck card. Available only through hobby dealers as a set, not retail packs, it carries a mild scarcity premium. Griffey's 630 HRs and 13 Gold Gloves ensure permanent demand. PSA 10 copies stay in the $1,500-2,500 range.

11

2018 Topps Shohei Ohtani

$3,500
Topps #700 PSA 10 Modern

The two-way sensation's flagship Topps rookie. Ohtani's $700 million Dodgers contract and back-to-back MVP seasons elevated this card significantly. Position #700 in the set — Topps' nod to the milestone — adds a collectibility angle. The most demanded modern Topps card after Trout.

12
Topps Update #US175 PSA 10 Modern

The most liquid modern baseball card — thousands of PSA 10 copies trade on eBay every year, making it a benchmark card for the modern era. Trout's three MVP awards and consistent performance as the generation's best player keep this in permanent collector circulation. Over 7,000 PSA 10 copies graded.

Topps Card Eras

Vintage Era (1952-1979)

Topps held an exclusive MLB license for most of this period, making their cards the only game in town. Print runs were modest by modern standards. Cards were often thrown away, given to children to play with, or deteriorated in storage. Survival rates in high grades are extremely low — which is why a 1952 Mantle PSA 9 sells for $12.6 million. Key sets include 1952, 1954, 1955, 1968, and 1969 Topps.

Junk Wax Era (1980-1993)

Competition from Donruss and Fleer in 1981 shattered Topps' monopoly. All three companies — later joined by Upper Deck and Score — began mass-producing cards to meet collector demand. Print runs exploded into the hundreds of millions. Most cards from this period are worth nothing. The exception: key rookie cards in genuine PSA 10 condition, which are scarce despite the high print runs because 1980s collectors didn't preserve their cards.

Modern Era (1994-Present)

Topps regained MLB exclusivity in 2009, ending Upper Deck's baseball license. Modern Topps cards span base flagship sets (Topps Series 1/2, Update), premium products (Bowman, Stadium Club, Archives), and insert-heavy releases. The modern era is defined by parallels, autographs, and numbered print runs that create artificial scarcity. Bowman Chrome prospect autos — technically Topps products — have produced the era's biggest modern card values.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the most valuable Topps baseball card ever?

The 1952 Topps Mickey Mantle #311 in PSA 9 condition, which sold for $12.6 million in August 2022, is the most valuable Topps baseball card ever sold. The same card in PSA 10 (three known copies) would be worth significantly more if it ever came to auction. The card's value comes from Mantle's iconic status, the scarcity of high-number 1952 Topps cards, and its role as the defining card of the post-war era.

How do Topps card eras affect value?

Topps cards span three broad eras: Vintage (1952-1979), Junk Wax (1980-1993), and Modern (1994-present). Vintage cards command the highest prices because print runs were smaller and survival rates in high grade are low. Junk wax cards are near-worthless in low grades due to overproduction, but gem mint PSA 10 copies of key rookies are genuinely scarce. Modern cards have large populations but specific short prints and auto parallels can be highly valuable.

Are modern Topps cards worth buying as investments?

Modern Topps base cards of superstars in PSA 10 condition — like Mike Trout's 2011 Update or Shohei Ohtani's 2018 flagship — have proven to be relatively stable. They are not high-growth investments but serve as liquid, tradeable collector assets. Short-print variations, autographs, and 1/1 superfractors carry significantly more upside. The highest-returning modern Topps cards have been Bowman Chrome prospect autos of players who became stars.
